Italian Seasoning
Italian seasoning is a popular spice and herb blend combined and used to season and finish recipes. This recipe has some variations, with herbs being used and adding things like onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. You will have to decide if you want those additional things in there or if you’d like to use salt and pepper at least separately to season whatever it is you’re making.
While you can purchase this from the store, my guess is you already have quite a few of these ingredients already in your cabinet. This recipe is a great way to use up any of those herbs and spices that may be going past the expiration date sometime soon.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Onion – Granules or powder can be used.
- Garlic – You can use granules or powder.
- Basil – Any dry basil will work.
- Oregano — Any dry oregano is good. If you don’t have this, substitute with more marjoram.
- Marjoram – This is a staple ingredient in an Italian seasoning blend. If you can’t find it, double the amount of oregano.
- Parsley – You can use homemade or store-bought.
- Sage – This one is optional, but it will add some great savory flavors. I use ground.
- Thyme – I prefer to use the leaves and not ground.
- Rosemary – This is optional, but I love rosemary so I always use it.
- Salt – I use coarse salt in all my cooking and baking. If you’d like to season the blend yourself, you can leave this out.
- Pepper – Use ground black, green, white, or pink peppercorns or a combination.

Chef Notes + Tips
- When purchasing dry herbs, I look for organic, on-sale, and free of fillers.
